Welcome to 2024
Year of the Dragon (and of climate action we hope)
Hello and welcome to 2024. It’s been a tough start to the year in some parts of Australia. Fires, floods, heat-waves and storms. These events are becoming more frequent and severe on a heating planet. This creates a lot of stress on people’s physical and mental resources but also motivation to demand climate action.
Duty of Care
Last year Kid Lit 4 Climate Action made a submission to the Senate’s Environment and Communications Legislation Committee on Senator Pocock’s Duty of Care Bill. The proposed Bill makes it mandatory for decision makers to consider climate impacts on future generations.
Feels like we shouldn’t have to tell politicians to do this, but we absolutely do.
On 22 February 2024 health and climate experts gave evidence at a Senate Committee hearing on the Bill. Transcripts are available in Hansard
The Senate Committee will present their report 27 March. In the lead up there will be events to support the Bill. So far the planned events are:
Paddle Out on the Sydney Northern Beaches - 10am Sat 9 March 2024 (This sounds delightful)
Duty of Care Bill discussion with Kate Chaney MP - 6pm Monday 11 March 2024 (Good option for people who can’t join the in-person events)
Kooyong Town Hall with Monique Ryan MP and Zoe Daniel MP - 7pm Thursday 14 March 2024 (In person or live-stream)
Mass Slow March for Climate - Naarm
Camp Sovereignty and School Strike 4 Climate are leading the Mass Slow March for Climate in Naarm/Melbourne on Saturday 16 March. This is the final event in Extinction Rebellion’s Rebel For Life campaign.
We are planning to join the march with the Kid Lit 4 Climate Action banner. Email kidlit4climateaction@gmail.com if you’d like to come, or for more information.
Books
Today is the CBCA’s Night of the Notables. Congratulations to those with listed books and don’t even worry about it, awards don’t mean anything, you were robbed to those who missed out.
If you have any upcoming books with an environment focus or message, please send an to kidlit4climateaction@gmail.com. We’d love to promote them within the group.
